Individual differences in task participation in wild chacma baboons

چکیده
Despite the controlled testing conditions that are typical of captive environments, many evaluations animal cognition fail to ensure all tested individuals participate. This is even more evident under wild conditions, as animals not restricted in their movement or social interactions and have other activities available. In this study, we aimed understand variation cognitive task participation chacma baboons, Papio ursinus. We quantified individual differences latency likelihood approach explore two types stimuli for tests: a set coloured paper bags (in an associative learning test) blue cardboard square second-order conditioning test). evaluated whether each was predicted by individuals’ phenotypic traits/states, well additional aspects behaviour: (1) availability competing at time (2) propensity exploit information. found consistent results both regarding effect age: juveniles were likely contact them longer. Similarly, tasks, involved activity less had lower exploration time. Finally, females with high use information (i.e. scrounge) likely, shorter latencies, bags. Our findings only highlight potential bias studies conducted can have, but also some attributes external factors determine participation.

Ontogenetic Scaling of Fore- and Hind Limb Posture in Wild Chacma Baboons (Papio hamadryas ursinus)
Large-scale interspecific studies of mammals ranging between 0.04-280 kg have shown that larger animals walk with more extended limb joints. Within a taxon or clade, however, the relationship between body size and joint posture is less straightforward. Factors that may affect the lack of congruence between broad and narrow phylogenetic analyses of limb kinematics include limited sampling of (1)...
متن کاملFemale–female competition for male ‘friends’ in wild chacma baboons, Papio cynocephalus ursinus
Lactating female chacma baboons, Papio cynocephalus ursinus, maintain close associations, or ‘friendships’, with particular males that may protect infants from sexually selected infanticide by a newly immigrated alpha male. In a 2-year study, we sought evidence of female–female competition for male friends in cases where two mothers maintained friendships with the same male simultaneously. In t...
متن کاملOccult Hepatitis B Virus Infection in Chacma Baboons, South Africa
During previous studies of susceptibility to hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, HBV DNA was detected in 2/6 wild-caught baboons. In the present study, HBV DNA was amplified from 15/69 wild-caught baboons. All animals were negative for HBV surface antigen and antibody against HBV core antigen. Liver tissue from 1 baboon was immunohistochemically negative for HBV surface antigen but positive for ...
متن کاملInfant carrying by male chacma baboons.
Male chacma baboons, Papio ursinus, carry their offspring during confrontations with higher ranking immigrant males, who are a threat to the infants' lives. The infants sometimes initiate these confrontations by approaching and provoking immigrant males when protective males are close by. Mothers rarely interfere during these interactions.

This study provides a new perspective on both the cognitive processes actually implemented and the effect of a simple experimental control - the recall constraint - in Sternberg's memory scanning task. These findings were highlighted by adopting a new approach based on the comparison of qualitative and quantitative results. The analysis of individual processing, on 72 adults, each participating...
